The File Menu The America Online File menu has some unique items specially designed to help you capture and save the information you gather when you are online. It also contains options you are familiar with from your use of other Macintosh software products. NEW This allows you to create a new document in which you can type notes or paste text you found online that you want to print or save. A text document can be up to 28K in size. If you want to mail a new file you created, you can transform any text document into a Mail memo by selecting "Address Memo." Another mail option is that you can save and close the text file, and then attach it to a Compose Mail memo using the Attach File option. OPEN... You can open various files that will be recognized by America Online, such as text files, mail files, image ("Glue") files, and sound files. PASTE TEXT FILE INTO FIELD In any file in which you are allowed to enter text from the keyboard, you may also insert the contents of a text file. This command is like Paste, except you are "pasting" from a text file, rather than from the Macintosh Clipboard. CLOSE This command closes a file. If you have modified a file, you will be asked whether or not you wish to save the changes first. SAVE This writes the contents of a modified file to the disk. If you have never saved this file before, you will be prompted to choose a file name. SAVE OTHERS Save As... saves the current file under a new name that you specify. Save Copy As... creates an extra copy of the current file. Save Selection As... allows you to save any portion of a text field directly into a file. This is particularly useful when you are browsing online. Simply highlight the text you wish to save before choosing this option. Save As MacPaint... is only enabled for Image ("Glue") Files (see "Glue Tools" in the help file for the Edit menu). Revert allows you to turn back the clock to the version last saved to disk. OPEN LOG Open Log is like an online tape recorder; it lets you open a file and keep a record of everything that happens during your session. If you have a log file open, all text you see during your session, including Chat text, Instant Message text, message board text, articles read, mail read, are logged in one long text stream. Outgoing text is not logged. When you choose "Open Log," you will be prompted to choose a name and destination (where it will be stored) for the text log. You can read your log file from within America Online only AFTER you close it. However, if the log file is bigger than 28K, you must read it with any text editor or word processor that handles large text files. SUSPEND LOG If you are logging your session, you can temporarily stop recording by using this feature. The file is not closed, and you can start recording again by selecting "Resume Logging" under the File Menu. PAGE SETUP Use this option when you are setting up America Online for printing. PRINT Use this to print America Online files. Any file that can be opened can be printed, including Image ("Glue") files. QUIT If you are online, "Quit" signs you off. If you are offline, "Quit" closes the America Online Application.
